The Climate Stick Project exists to help you (and millions of others like you) work together to end the burning of carbon and redirect resources to support conservation and green energy production. We all need to work at the grassroots level to talk about climate change. Our work is to explain the climate problem to as many people as possible using the Climate Stick.
For almost eleven years the Climate Stick website has presented information with details about the climate crisis. Much has happened positively (price of coal now much higher than wind and solar) and many other slight improvements due to conservation and other developments. But in actuality, the time for us to stop burning carbon has shrunk to where Bill McKibben in late 2024 (see first video) said we have about FIVE YEARS to make whatever changes we can, because each year after gets more and more difficult for us to survive in the long run.
The terrible news from Texas this July of over two hundred possible dead has shaken many people, but when more than 5,000 died in Liberia in 2023 we just did not know that such things could happen here. Or did you even know about this happening?

As many as 10,000 people are missing and feared dead after a storm slammed into Libya, unleashing a devastating surge of floodwaters across the country's east.
A disaster wrought by intense rainfall from Mediterranean storm Daniel intensified when two dams burst — with at least 5,300 people killed in one coastal city and thousands more missing, according to the Libya News Agency.
More and more people are coming to understand that stopping the burning of carbon must end SOONER RATHER THAN LATER. The purpose of the Climate Stick Thermometer is to inform the American Public that Standardized Enhanced Deep (SED) Geothermal Plants are what are needed beside more wind, solar and conservation to help us eliminate burning carbon in the next ten years .
You are now seeing the Climate Stick Thermometer version of our web site. It introduces our program to support (in addition to continuing our support for wind, solar and conservation) 50,or more, Standardized Enhanced Deep (SED) Geothermal plants. This would be the major additional source of electricity that can be implemented at the needed scale by 2032 or so. Much sooner than the 2050 as new geothermal and other new sources are believed to be possible.
Change to Climate Stick Thermometer
The Climate Stick was created to help educate about the climate crisis by having the science easily there for discussions that can lead to action. The Climate Stick Thermometer is the same with addition of information about how to get Deep Geothermal plants into the discussion of reducing the negative aspects of climate change. There are three possible ways that Geothermal Energy has been thought of, and in some of these, used. We focus on the second, Deep Geothermal. The three are:
- Ground source geothermal uses heat pumps that can be used for heating and cooling of individual buildings using the difference of the temperature outside (say 85 degrees) and the temperature of the ground 10 ft down (about 55 degrees) to cool the inside of the building. Or to heat the building when the outside air is 30 degrees and 65 degrees is needed inside. Google “geothermal heat pumps explained” to explore this possibility for your home or business. We support their use but they have a substantial marketing and delivery systems that do not need that much help from us.
- Deep geothermal, usually 2 to 4 miles down, is a solution to the problem of using the burning of carbon to generate electricity. Until recent events this was thought to be too expensive to attempt, let alone implement. Burning Carbon can now (shortly) be eliminated by heat gained from deep in the earth using SED Geothermal Plants. This is our major focus!!
- The third form of geothermal is when pockets of heat are relatively close to the surface and easily accessible. But this has not been a very effective source because of the pollution caused by the methods used and the possibility of earth quakes caused by the wells needed to obtain the heat.
The education about Standardized Enhanced Deep(SED) Geothermal Plants is what the Climate Stick Thermometer activity will focus on for those who wish to help make this a national priority SOONER RATHER THAN LATER.
The general description for SED Geothermal Plants is that:
- S stands for the idea that where possible the design of the plant components will have standard designs, and that output amounts would also be standard.
- E stands for Enhanced which is how the down well and flow parts (basic well, heat transfer fluids, pumps and controls) are designed and arranged for optimum use.
- D which is for Deep.
Education about SED Geothermal Plantshere are one of three additions to the educational work already underway with the Climate Stick that are added to the tasks of the Climate Stick Thermometer:
- Making the knowledge of SED Geothermal Plants available (as they can be designed and implemented) to the public in as many ways as possible.
- Creation of a National Act to help support SED Geothermal Plants defined by the IPOs that are used to partially fund the construction projects that will produce them.
- Providing assistance to those who would create a mass base of investors in advance of the IPOs for the companies that would create and maintain the SED Geothermal Plants.
Understanding this as our operating plan is the beginning of working to achieve the goal of getting 50, or more, SED Geothermal Plants on line SOONER RATHER THAN LATER.
A change that makes Deep Geothermal energy more possible in the near future
Beneath the surface of the Earth there are great expanses of sedimentary rock. Drilling technology has been in place for many years that created wells that bring up the oil and gas. Our main energy source for decades has been the oil and gas as we grew from one billion people in1804 to the 8 billion we now have. However, under the sedimentary rocks are harder rocks that make drilling into them much more difficult. That has prevented using the great heat that is miles down under the sedimentary rock in the Earth to be used for our energy needs.
It is now possible that a technology developed at MIT from how Micro Wave Ovens work can perform the creation of wells that go through the harder rock. A plant is scheduled to be built using this technology in 2026.
The normal/usual way that the process of taking this breakthrough to where it would provide a major addition of clean energy would usually take the 20 to 25 years that is presently part of the discussion about what is to be done to get more energy in the future.
Climate Stick Thermometer has adopted a plan for making the implementation take much less time, even having the required plants in 6 to 7 years if not sooner. This plan has three parts:
- Building awareness that it can be done SOONER RATHER THAN LATER.
- Mobilizing citizens to demand a Federal Act to promote and fund SED Geothermal Plants and working our political system to the pass that ACT.
- Assembling a group of people whose goal is creating mass base of investors in the companies that would create and maintain the SED Geothermal Plants.

The reason the Climate Stick exists is to help build a mass movement of people to stop the burning of carbon as the major way that humans get energy for the processes that support modern life on our planet. The green grass represents the grassroots movement that will change our current politics, one that is now controlled in large part by the economic power of the fossil fuel industry. The Climate Stick has been a tool that helps make talking about the climate crisis everyday an easy thing to do for the great majority of people (the grassroots) who are not climate scientists, hard core environmentalists or political actors. Many people are already part of the grassroots movement to end the burning of carbon and the Climate Stick was with the help of many, a symbol (similar to the Peace Sign) of the movement to create sustainable societies not dependent on the burning of fossil fuels. And now the Climate Stick Thermometer can be a new symbol for our collective efforts to STOP BURNING CARBON.
